Okay, so I feel like I should clarify things here. NOTHING happened to Benji (the Charmander) in my game. I did the same thing with him that I did with Rosie - temporarily put someone (I believe it was Sandy) in the PC, pick him up, then immediately put him in the PC and get Sandy back. There were no close calls. There was no death. (so heh sorry for making everyone think there would be a death today lol but no)
I was doodling Charmander in a notebook because I wanted Benji to have something that set him apart from other Charmanders - like scars. I knew that I would use him eventually (most likely due to retiring Zuzu or Sandy), so I wanted him to be unique. But I also wanted to give a reason for his scars - you can decide whether his trainer beat and abandonded him, or if he had a close call with his last trainer and was abandoned for being weak. I choose to believe the latter.
I know that, in game, the Charmander is given to you by a kid that believes himself to be a bad trainer, but in the anime (which Yellow is loosely based on), Ash finds Charmander abandoned and near death. Which is a lot more interesting than "Dear Mom this kid gave me a Charmander I named him Benji I hope I'll use him one day," because that would literally be the exact same situation as getting Rosie. But Benji is special. Benji is my babbie.
Since I knew I wanted him to have scars, and that I wanted Alex to find him on the brink of death and save him, I thought "What better time to give Alex a proper motivation?" Because here's the thing - A good character needs proper motivation. Alex's motivation at the beginning was to prove to Gary that he's not weak. But he needs motivation to go through the whole Rocket hullabaloo. What better motivation for a ten year old that loves Pokemon than "I want to protect Pokemon from bad people?"
I will probably retire Zuzu soon (because Golbat kinda sucks first gen ;u; ) and use Benji (since Charizard can learn Fly in Yellow
